Geiger Counter GC01 With Pancake Probe

We present our enhanced version with Pancake probe (PNK) of the well-known economical Geiger counter FNIRSI “GC-01”.

Compared to the original version, the following changes have been made:

1) Replaced the small and inefficient Chinese original Geiger tube, with a high-performance professional Pancake-type circular probe, Made in the USA.

This new probe gives unprecedented performance to the small Chinese geiger which can now detect Beta and Gamma radiation with extreme sensitivity, also the particular ALFA radiations.

2) Replaced the original back cover with a new one equipped with a circular window to allow the GC-01 also detects ALFA radiation.

To be able to install the new Pancake probe, it became necessary to remove the original back cover, to replace it with a new one of greater depth, appropriately designed and 3D printed for the purpose.

Our new cover includes a circular grid window approximately 46mm in diameter that allows you to expose the circular active surface of the Geiger Pancake Tube, directly outwards, so as to be able to measure ALFA radiation without problems.

3) Adaptation (obliged) of the high voltage that powers the Geiger tube.

By replacing the original Geiger tube with a professional Pancake type one with different characteristics, it was also necessary to adapt the value of the high voltage that powers the tube itself, thus adjusting it to the correct nominal value of approx 500V, in accordance with what is recommended by the Pancake manufacturer himself.

4) Implemented the Ticker and installed a new, more advanced Firmware in the same microcontroller.

E’ the original firmware has been replaced with a much more advanced one, particularly rich in many new features and with a new, more readable and rational graphic design. Obviously the implementation of the Ticker could not be missing, which allows the small Geiger to emit a programmable “click” or “beep” sound for each particle detected.

5) The new radioactivity measurement methods implemented in the Enhanced FNIRSI

The Radioactivity Detector FNIRSI GC-01 / PNK can now measure the DOSE, the instantaneous level, and radiation medium. Also thanks to new advanced software pre-installed you can change the acquisition times, and even set them in automatic mode and pit can also show the graphic trend of radioactivity in the time domain.

It can emit an audible alarm if a dose and/or instantaneous radioactivity values ​​are acquired that exceed a certain pre-settable threshold value. He GC-01 is equipped with an internal 3.7V 1200mAh battery and a USB socket which is used exclusively to be recharged from a PC or from a common 220V mains adapter (not provided).

In summary, here are the new features of the enhanced FNIRSI Geiger Counter:

summing up, after our intervention the Geiger counter FNIRSI GC-01 / PNK modified by us, it has become much more sensitive than its original version and most of the Geiger counters on sale in the main market places. As well as being extremely sensitive, it can now perfectly detect as well as penetrating GAMMA radiation, also ALFA and BETA radiation using different measurement algorithms that can be reset at will.

As already mentioned, These amazing features are mainly due to the special professional-class Pancake probe, to the new firmware, and the new rear window cover.

Regarding the Muller Pancake Geiger tube it must be said that unlike conventional Geiger tubes, It has a large circular active surface on its upper side, consisting of a special membrane in very thin mica that can be easily penetrated by any ionizing radiation.

So this membrane is made of mica, being extremely thin, it can be easily penetrated by radiation with non-negligible mass, like ALPHA particles, made up of 2 protons and 2 neutrons, (in practice HELIUM nuclei), and in general by any other low energy ionizing radiation.
